Students will need the following materials for their sessions:
  • The Official ACT Prep Guide (available online or at a local bookstore.)
  • Should your student complete/have already completed all of the tests in this guide, we will provide loose, real tests at $5 per copy.
  • An ACT-approved calculator: Please click here for the list of approved devices. NOTE: Many of our students use the TI- Nspire CAS. This calculator is *not* permitted on the ACT.

**We will absolutely need to see any previous score reports (PSAT/SAT/PreACT/ACT) including their individual breakdowns to analyze how your student can quickly improve upon his or her scores. Please also let us know if any prior test preparation has taken place.**

Goals and Expectations:

We have found that students glean the most out of each session when they attend simulations and do each homework assignment under the conditions mentioned below.

Homework Assignments:

An integral part of test preparation is consistent practice. Accordingly, we will be assigning homework tests.  Students will be grading and scoring these at-home practice test assignments and will therefore have access to the answer keys.

Please have students use the following guidelines while taking tests:
  • Homework test sections should be taken timed to replicate actual time limits (or extended time limits) and to help establish good pacing.
  • The answer sheet must be used to record answers.
  • No scrap paper is allowed. All written work should be done on the test.
  • Students should take their practice tests in a location without distractions, such as a room without phones and computer access.

  • Usually, students need to plan on taking the SSAT multiple times, with January or February being the last dates most schools will accept for admission criteria.

*Students also have the option to take a Flex test. Here is the link from SSAT describing this test. This version of the test is usually designed to accommodate students who can’t attend one of the standard test dates, but it is also a great way to reduce anxiety as it is given on a 1-on-1 basis, and we highly advise it for students who perform best in a private, quiet testing room.

SSAT notes: "Students at all testing levels are allowed to take one Flex test per testing year (August 1 – July 31), except for Elementary Level students who have already taken two Standard tests."

Materials:

For one-on-one test preparation sessions, students will need a copy of The Official Guide to the SSAT.   When purchasing the book, please also note which version to buy based on your student's current grade.

Should your student complete/have already completed all of the tests in the Official Guide, we will provide loose SSATs at $5 per copy.

Students who need intensive remediation in the math sections should also purchase the following book:

**We will absolutely need to see any previous score reports including their individual breakdowns to analyze how your student can quickly improve upon his or her scores. Please also let us know if any prior test preparation has taken place.**

Homework:

In addition to the practice materials assigned by your SSAT Preparation Specialist, your student should do at least 15 minutes of vocabulary work, 3-5 times a week on Quizlet.

Students may also use Read Theory, at least 15-30 minutes, 3-5 times a week.  To use Read Theory, students need to log in here.
